Preferred Restaurants

This is a list of restaurants in the United States that don't cater to the Chuck-E-Cheese crowd. If you have a chance, be sure to support these restaurants!

If you know of a restaurant in your area that should be included on this list, use the contact form to tell me about it!

But first, where NOT to eat.

Also avoid these Manhattan, NY, restaurants, as they are being advertised as "Family Friendly" and courting the toddler crowd:
L’atelier de Joel Robuchon
Gramercy Tavern
Fred's at Barney's New York
Cafe Boulud
Vermilion

And avoid this restaurant in San Antonio, Texas:
Gourmet Burger Grill

The Augustine Grill
Castle Rock, CO
(Restaurant Policy: "For their own safety and in consideration of our other customers, please keep all children seated at the table at all times in the dinning room and patio. Thanks you.")

Alamo Draft House (Restaurant and Movie Theater)
Texas Locations: Austin, Houston, Katy, & San Antonio

Star Cinema Grill (Restaurant and Movie Theater)
Houston, TX
(No children under 5 allowed)

Palazzo's Trattoria
Houston, TX
(I have heard that this Houston-based chain has a separate "adults only" section.)

Virginia

Funny Bone Comedy Club & Restaurant
Richmond, VA
(All shows 21 and up; no children allowed)

The inn at Little Washington
Washington, VA
(High-priced restaurant that strongly discourages children, offers babysitting services, and at this price, I doubt they put up with bratty behavior when the occasional child does eat there)

Alamo Draft House (Restaurant and Movie Theater)
Winchester, VA
(Some Alamo Drafthouse locations ban children under 6 (except to children's movies) -- I believe this one does, too. Let me know if you find out otherwise.)

Please let me know about your experiences at any of the above locations.

No restaurant listings in your area? Stay tuned -- I'm sure more restaurants will join this list in time. But in the meantime, follow these tips to try and find some restaurants in your area that are not run like zoos!

  • Never support a business that advertises "kids eat free" as that only means they are charging you more for your meal in order to subsidize the Chuck-E-Cheese crowd.
  • Avoid any restaurant with high chairs and kiddie menus, as they are obviously catering to the exact crowd that we want to avoid.
  • Avoid chain restaurants, as they are more likely to advertise to kids and gullible parents. If you do choose to eat there, I highly recommend getting the food to go.
  • When possible, support locally owned businesses. They are more interested in keeping you as a customer than a big chain, and may take your requests or complaints more seriously.
